Artist and Art Critic?

Howdy!

I’m sure you are reading this and wondering what you should expect from this blog, and if I am being honest… I don’t even really know! The goal for this blog is to make art and art criticism more easily accessible to people outside of the field and practice. Art can be hard for people to understand and decipher so I would like to make that easier for people. step by step. When I first started “working” (practicing in classes) on art theory and criticism I found all these scholarly sources we were reading hard to understand. So much of the things we were required to read were written by scholars for scholars. Which does not make the learning part of education very easy. Breaking down concepts and ideas can take time and effort and a lot of frustration BUT it can be so rewarding seeing the progress you have made as well as being able to understand really difficult concepts. I find art history and theory FUN! and I hope we will have fun discussing and talking about it together, because I plan on using this as a way to keep on learning as well. We are all just figuring this thing out, one step at a time.

Now… Do I have any plans for how I plan on doing this? no… definitely not. But I just plan on having fun with it, I think that will make it more enjoyable to read as well. So really, we are kind of both learning as we go, I would like to make this blog a place to discuss ideas and concepts without the fear of being wrong or looking silly. I don’t know you guys… I had this idea kind of one a whim, but I am excited where it makes take me.

My basic ideas for this blog are that each post will be a commentary over one work of art or maybe even a series of pieces that go together. We will talk about the imagery, then we will analysis it, and then we will try and connect it to other works or ideas. EXCITING! I am completely open to ideas and recommendations for pieces I should talk about. I hope to post weekly but with this crazy school schedule who knows how well I will keep up with it.

A little about me… My name is Callie, and I am studying Art, Technology, and Culture at the University of Oklahoma with a minor in Art History. I am going on my 6th semester here and graduation is looming in the distance. I say looming because holy crap I am going to be graduating soon… Scary. I am fairly new to art and art history, I never did either before coming to college, so I really dove headfirst into the deep end, didn’t I? I am working mostly in photography and animation, but I enjoy playing around in all different mediums. The photo up top is actually one of mine! It is titled Multiples of Me it’s a photo I created for an abstract assignment, and it is one of my favorites. If you guys are interested in seeing more of my work, I can definitely show you, but my focus is on analyzing OTHER artists work 🙂 That is really all I have for you guys now, I am just jittery with excitement to get this blog up and running.
